22-02-04 - 11pm - We have a running sequential system!!! Although very very basic (ie. basically no control over the valve actuation at the moment) it's working just as we expected it would.

Low down, the small turbo spools up QUICKLY to about 0.4 bar, at which point the actuator on the large turbo valve sees enough boost to begin to open that valve. The opening of the valve stops the boost raising, and slightly lowers it while the big turbo spools to the same pressure. At that point, both turbos continue to push on to the wastegate set 0.9 bar. Beautiful!

As it's so uncontrolled, actuation and boost itself is somewhat spiky, but here's a video and some photos of where we're at as of tonight!

Current engine bay shot. You'll notice some additions... ;)

The big turbo valve's actuator!

The 2nd blowoff valve, on the IC piping inside the front bar.

Another shot of the new actuator and blowoff valve.

More news once we get some electronic boost control!!! (Or something else happens, hah)

Take care!

16-02-04 - 7:30pm - Not far off now... The 2 APEXi Blowoff Valves are on now, yay.

I finally found a 2nd HKS boost gauge, which arrived today, too! It's identical to the one in the car already, and will be very useful in tuning the sequential system. There's an AVC-R on its way (Thanks Fabio!), and another being sourced in Japan for me now (should be here on the 29th Feb, yay!)

Shortly we need to install the actuator on the big turbo valve, the boost gauge, and then whatever boost controllers we have on hand at the time. It's going to be a very busy couple of months, as there's also a big MR2 rebuild happening at the same time, too... Hopefully we can get a lot of this stuff finished and onto tuning the system as soon as possible!

Sorry for the small update, but not too much to add for now...

Take it easy!
Jason

10-02-04 - 7pm - Finally, the video! I knew you all wanted to see the car finally driving after all this time, so I concentrated on quickly editing the very first video of the car driving once we moved it out of the garage and cleaned it (you all know how dirty it was!).

I must stress, however, that the view of the engine bay, and the work on the upgrade, was far, FAR from complete at this time, and it is not going to end up like this. The welds are unground, there's no blowoff valves, the turbo valves are simply opened full time, so the car is running in full synchronous mode, meaning lots of lag. Oh, and it's running only 0.8 bar (at the top end of the rev range, haha) We're still waiting on parts to complete the sequential side of things, and that's when I'm sure we can get some real good footage going, to actually show what this turbo system can do. :)

The car is still running as it was that day, however we've plumbed in a blowoff valve (stock one temporarily), which is helping somewhat to stop turbo reversion, and we've added the valve to stop air reversing back through the big turbo, too.

Anyway, I know you've been waiting to see it... here you go.

Sorry about the crappy editing, I was just trying to get it done ASAP! You can blame Tris for the amazing photography. ;)

9-02-04 - 6:30pm - Well, there's lots to be said, for sure.

For a start, sorry to all of you who've been watching the site wondering what's been happening with the car and the project!

I've been slack with the updates, mainly because I had to somewhat redesign the news section of the site, as it was getting too large for one page. After a little stuffing around wondering how to best do it, I've settled on the "Prev Month Next Month" style, so you can go back and forth between the months at will, with quicker page loading times.

As for the car... it's still running beautifully on Sync'd turbos. We've been waiting for Electronic Boost Controllers, as our supplier has been somewhat hard to get a hold of recently. This is a real sore point, as 3 EBC's are practically all I need to start and finish the sequential side of things and tuning.

I have a couple of BIG thankyous to put out...

Firstly Fabio for the injectors! Even though they aren't hitting the car till I've got hold of an AEM and the rest of the fuel system, having the 1000cc Injectors already here is great!

Long Tran, for sending me a stock turbo system actuator he freed up from his big single upgrade. Thanks so much buddy, you've saved us lots of time and stuffing around trying to get hold of a 2nd actuator locally!

Brad (With the Series 6 RX-7) for selling me the 2 APEXi Blowoff Valves which are shortly going onto the car, for an awesome price. :) Thanks mate!

It's great to see so many people who are actively interested in seeing our system work out, even going as far as actually sending us parts we're trying to source... for all of you, thanks so much, we hope the car will do us all  proud upon completion :)

I know I promised you videos! I still have them, and I've been trying to get them ready for distribution. Unfortunately I've not quite finished editing or compressing them yet, but I'm going to make it a priority once I can come across a DECENT video editing tool (Which doesn't crash!) If you have any suggestions, PLEASE tell me :)

The welder has been broken for a week now, Tris got the call today to say it's now fixed, yay... so the past week has been more R&R time than car work.

Stuff to do...

I have the 2 blowoff valves to put on soon....

The actuator needs to be installed on the big turbo's exhaust valve so we can then set up the sequential system.

Still need 3 electronic boost controllers to control the wastegate and both of the exhaust valve actuators. Don't have them, really need them... dammit

Still have to get a 60mm 2.5 Bar Black Faced HKS Boost Gauge with peak hold, identical to the one in the car already. This isn't necessary but will REALLY help us tune the car with boost readings from both turbos.

Know someone with 3 identical boost controllers they want to sell? (Must be able to hold 2.5bar and have good gain control)

How about the boost gauge?

Please let me know if you do! ;)

There'll be more updates more often now... sorry about the little lull.

Oh, and the videos will be posted soon!

Take care all,

Jason
