- 10pm - Progress! Last weekend consisted of car work, for the most
part! I am sorry I haven't got a new, updated shot of the engine
bay, I'll get one ASAP!
The
new valve is fitted, and looking very funky... we have a manual wire
running to the cabin for switching of the valve, just for testing
purposes...
Speaking
of testing, with the low boost we're set to for now, we were
actually able to get a Sequential changeover working properly, at
about 6psi initial boost on the first turbo before bringing the
bigger turbo online and boosting through to 12psi. What's more, the
changeover was extremely smooth yet powerful as expected... no dead
spot noticed, and it sounds great!
So...
about that power thing...
That's about to be sorted. We're hiring out the hub dyno to tune the
car on Monday arvo! As it's still running fuel system and
transmission, we'll be limiting it somewhat to a conservative
tune... maybe somewhere between 400 and 500RWHP, depending on the
injector duty :)
At
least once we have some "Safe" power there, (funny term
that) we can play with a bit more range for the turbo changeover
before hitting max boost and having the wastegate take over.
A
few other bits and pieces have come to light, and are going to be
addressed shortly. We'll be pulling the big turbo off on Sunday and
replacing it's bigass exhaust housing with a slightly smaller one to
promote prespool, as we have several theories running as to why we
might not be able to get the changeover running at higher initial
boost.
Anyways,
lots to wait and see! Can't wait till Monday... Here's hoping my
engine doesn't take to chewing on Compressor wheel bits!
Will
keep you all updated soon, and will definitely get a new photo of
the now more complex than ever looking engine bay :)

- 9pm - Ok! Well I promised to get a photo... so here it is! Current
as of now, this is what the engine bay looks like!

As
you can see, stuff's looking a bit more polished and a lot more
complex! You may also have noticed that the exhaust housing is now
smaller.... Tris and I spent the Sunday before tuning day swapping a
smaller AR exhaust housing in, in an attempt to narrow down some
issues with the sequential changeover. Fortunately it's helped us
understand how everything is working, so hopefully it'll help with
future revisions, too.
Now
you all want to know how the tune went, I'm sure...
It
was good. The car didn't explode... However, we did hit boost cut
problems, which was sort of annoying... In the end we found that we
couldn't really run any more than about 0.85 bar through the new
turbo system before hitting boost cut. This was somewhat
disappointing as we were seeing some very saucy numbers... up to a
little under 400rwhp at just 0.9 bar boost. In the end, we settled for
a milder 355rwhp at 0.8 bar boost, somewhat restricted by an annoying
3" cat which needs to be changed to fit better with the rest of
the 4" exhaust system.
Yes,
it's not as much power as on the stock turbos... but looking at it
comparatively, the tune was a big success. We were seeing maybe
40-50rwhp per 0.1 bar pressure increase, but were hitting boost cut
so couldn't keep it at the 1+ bar we wanted.
The
fix? I'm picking up a Greddy E-Manage shortly as a temporary measure
to manage everything, so we will be able to know what injector duty
is at, and be able to tune much better till it's time for a proper
ECU and lots of power.
We're
expecting probably 450rwhp at about 1 bar boost with the E-Manage
installed. I definitely don't want to take the car past 450rwhp
until I look at strengthening the gearbox and putting the 1000cc
injectors in.
In
other news, I've decided against entering my car in Motorvation this
year. It crept up too quickly and I don't think enough has changed
on the car to warrant the entry fee plus all the hassle of partying
and keeping an eye on the car all weekend :) Instead, I'll be
getting one of Tris's camping passes and just partying ;) Thanks
Tris!
Incidentally,
that DOES mean that the Burninate MR2 is gonna be at Motorvation.
The next 3 weeks are going to be very very busy at Tris's place, as
there's a motor to build, lots of bodywork to do, and lots more bits
for the beast of an MR2 that needs doing before Motorvation. Expect
it to be running beautifully and kicking some ass at Motorvation!
All
in all, stuff's moving ahead and lookin' good!
Take
it easy, I'll update again when possible.
Regards,
Jason
